I am very excited to share how this week went. I got the drinks and snacks later in the week last week and started selling them later in the week this week. My church had a church wide kickball game. Youth vs Adults. I asked the youth pastor Jacob if I could sell my refreshments at the event. He okayed it and so I sold at the kickball game. The waters sold extremely well, selling 28 of the 40 for a $28 dollar profit. The chips did not have as good of fortune as the waters, but still did fairly well, selling 6 of 18 for a $12 dollar profit. All in all the snack idea worked well for me and I am thinking about attempting it again. I am currently at $40.04
This week I made a lot of progress and it gave me a big confident boost toward this project. I tried the drink and snack idea out. My mom went to Sam's club and was buying groceries. I texted her and asked her how much a big pack of any kind of drink are. She said that a pack of 28 assorted Gatorade's was $10.98. A little pricey for my liking. A pack of 40 waters, only $2.98. That was more like it. Next I needed some snack items that appealed to many people. An assortment of lays chips bags worked out perfectly, and only cashing in at 6.98. Both the waters and the chips added up gives you 9.96, subtracted from my $16 I started with, leaves me with $6.04. I will sell the waters for $1.00 and the chips for $2.00. I do not know where I will be selling these items yet but stay tuned to see how these go.
This week I made a very tiny bit of progress. I tried out the funny drawings strategy, which was also used in Ryan's video. I was unable to sell most of the drawings because people said that it was just dumb. I did sell 1 of them to a friend named Robby in my youth group. He gave me a dollar for the drawing, putting me at $16 at the project total for me now. I wished I had sold more of the drawings, but I am happy and want to be optimistic that I sold at least 1. The next strategy that I might try would be to buy snacks and drinks and sell them to people for a little bit more than they are worth to generate some revenue.
Week 8 should be pretty productive for me because I think the snack strategy will work out good. I am not doing nearly as good as I thought I would be at this point. I have been very busy and have let genius hour slip to not as much of a priority. I need to work a lot harder on this in the next couple of weeks and gain some ground on how Kristian is doing.
With that being said, I got together with Kristian and we discussed that $1000 is a little unreasonable for where both of us are at this point of the project. We decided that an end goal of $500 is more reasonable end goal. Each of us getting $250 rather than $500 is a much more attainable goal. I am still at $15 right now but i think if I work hard and focus on the project I can probably get $250. Week 5 was not to great for me. I had to work all days of spring break and so could not go out and interact with people to use my $15. That did give me some needed time to think about what would be the most effective way to use the $15 I've gotten. I thought of many ideas that I am going to try next week. The ideas I came up with were some that Ryan used in his video and some that I had thought of by myself.
I am not sure how the ideas will work out but we will see!
I FINALLY SOLD MY BOJANGELS GIFT CARD!!!!! After many weeks of trying and failing, I sold my gift card for $15. I was originally trying to sell it for $10, but my co worker Duncan was nice enough to buy it for $15! I unfortunately forgot to video it so that was not good but I am just happy I sold it finally. Now that I have the $15 dollars, I think what I want to do is buy some snacks or something like that and sell them at events like Brock basketball games where there is no concession stands. I am not sure if it will work or not, but I am anxious to try things out and try and reach our goal. I think that since I have one transaction under my belt I will be up and running and get some more going.
This week was another slow, tough week for transactions for me. I thought that the Bojangles gift card would be a big hit. Turns out it is a very hard sell. I tried to sell it to many people for many different prices, no luck. I tried people in my extended family, people at church, at work, and some of my friends and no one purchased it. Like I said earlier, I thought a gift card would sell for money a lot easier than this Bojangles one is. My plan is to target the same people that I have been and hope someone eventually buys it from me. I was planning to sell it for a little less than it is worth so since it’s a $15 gift card, I will try and sell it for $10. I hope to have money and made a lot more progress than I am at right now by next week so that my blog posts can have more content and be more interesting to keep up with. This week Kristian and I officially started our genius hour project
So this weekend was a big first week due to the fact I made my first transaction. I was meeting with my theban mask modernization group at Panera Sunday night and I really wasn’t focused on anything else but finishing the script for the modernization. Then Kristian made a grade saving statement.. “DUDE, WE GOTTA DO OUR GENIUS HOUR BLOG POST”. Panic mode was upon us. I had a penny from the change I received when I purchased my meal and luckily Carly Wall was a saint and agreed to trade me her Bojangles gift card for my penny. I really did not think I would get something as valuable as a gift card, but since I do have it, I feel really good about where I can go from here with the project. Carly said she wasn’t sure how much was on the card so this really could go either ways. This either could be a steal just by observing the original $15 dollar label on it or a major fail and the card ending up having less than a dollar. But for now, let’s stay optimistic, because I think this is a great item to start my challenge. |
